While filming, I’ve been lucky enough to be old enough to be out of high school but young enough to still remember the stakes of high school. Seeing and meeting people from different walks of life has made me who I am. In terms of experiences influenced by good old “Meadowjail,” I think I’m blessed that Meadowvale was diverse when I attended it. Two weeks after high school, I did it all over again on Never Have I Ever. Let me first answer the question that I’ve been asked before: “Would you ever repeat high school?” I would say no. NS: There is a nice sense of community at Meadowvale in Mississauga, right? How did your own experience at Meadowvale prepare you for this role as Devi? Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Devi in season three of Never Have I Ever. Ramakrishnan - who recently did a Vogue makeup tutorial - speaks with Shondaland about her comedy heroes, her own high school experience, and what makes her a true Canadian. For us older people, it’s a familiar throwback to our not-so-easy early years. The 20-year-old has shown us how accessible (and hilarious) she is in the series, displaying her character’s need for popularity, her nerdiness, her loyalty to her friends, and her romances with Paxton Hall-Yoshida (Darren Barnet), Ben (Jaren Lewison), and Indian heartthrob Des (Anirudh Pisharody) at Sherman Oaks High School. Since moving to Hollywood in her teens, Ramakrishnan has become one of the shining stars on the small screen. She grew up in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, and famously garnered the breakthrough role for Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher’s high school comedy out of 15,000 applicants. As the show gears up for the premiere of its third season on Friday, August 12, she returns to playing the role of Devi Vishwakumar, an Indian American teenager who is going through all the ups and downs of adolescence - from finding her voice to growing pains with her mother, to trying to stay focused on her studies (even when she’s a bit boy crazy). Maitreyi Ramakrishnan has captured viewers’ hearts as the star of Netflix’s Never Have I Ever, a teen dramedy that’s relatable to people of all ages.
